Get Current DateTime

Overview

This skill provides access to current date and time information in various formats. It emphasizes ISO 8601 UTC as the default standard for consistency and interoperability. Use this skill whenever you need accurate timestamps for logging, scheduling, file naming, or any datetime-aware operations.

Instructions

Getting Current DateTime (Default: ISO 8601 UTC)

The recommended default format is ISO 8601 in UTC timezone:

date -u +"%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ"

This returns a timestamp like: 2026-01-16T21:11:38Z

Getting Unix Timestamp

For epoch time (seconds since January 1, 1970):

date +%s

This returns a number like: 1768597898

Getting Local Time with Timezone Offset

date --iso-8601=seconds

This returns: 2026-01-16T16:11:38-05:00 (with local timezone offset)

Getting Custom Formats

Use the date command with format specifiers:

# Date only (YYYY-MM-DD)
date -u +"%Y-%m-%d"

# Time only (HH:MM:SS)
date -u +"%H:%M:%S"

# Human-readable format
date -u +"%A, %B %d, %Y at %H:%M:%S UTC"

Usage Examples

Example 1: Getting Current DateTime for Logging

Input: "What's the current time in UTC?"

Output:

date -u +"%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ"
# Result: 2026-01-16T21:11:38Z

Example 2: Getting Unix Timestamp for APIs

Input: "I need a Unix timestamp for this API call"

Output:

date +%s
# Result: 1768597898

Example 3: Getting Date for File Naming

Input: "Generate a timestamp for a backup filename"

Output:

date -u +"%Y%m%d_%H%M%S"
# Result: 20260116_211138
# Use as: backup_20260116_211138.tar.gz

Guidelines

  • Always default to UTC: Use -u flag with date command for consistent, timezone-independent timestamps
  • Use ISO 8601 format: The YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ format is internationally recognized and sorts correctly
  • Choose format based on use case:
    • ISO 8601 UTC: APIs, logs, databases, data exchange
    • Unix timestamp: Calculations, sorting, APIs requiring epoch time
    • Custom formats: User display, file naming, reports
  • Be explicit about timezone: When displaying local time, always include the timezone offset
  • Avoid ambiguous formats: Never use formats like MM/DD/YY which can be misinterpreted

Common Patterns

# ISO 8601 UTC (recommended default)
date -u +"%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ"

# ISO 8601 with local timezone
date --iso-8601=seconds

# Unix timestamp (seconds)
date +%s

# Unix timestamp (milliseconds)
echo $(($(date +%s%N)/1000000))

# Date only
date -u +"%Y-%m-%d"

# Time only
date -u +"%H:%M:%S"

# File-safe timestamp
date -u +"%Y%m%d_%H%M%S"

# Human readable
date -u +"%A, %B %d, %Y"

Edge Cases

  • Timezone transitions (DST): Always use UTC for storage and calculations to avoid DST-related bugs. Convert to local time only for display
  • Millisecond precision: Standard date provides second precision. For milliseconds, use date +%s%N and divide by 1000000
  • System clock accuracy: The returned time is only as accurate as the system clock. For critical applications, ensure NTP synchronization
  • Different date command versions: GNU date (Linux) and BSD date (macOS) have different syntax. These examples use GNU date

References

  • REFERENCE.md - Complete date format specifiers and timezone handling

Limitations

  • Requires GNU date command (Linux/Unix). macOS uses BSD date with different syntax
  • Millisecond precision requires additional processing
  • System clock accuracy depends on NTP synchronization
  • Does not handle date arithmetic (use date -d for that)
