Setup snapshot

git clone https://github.com/BennettPhil/builder-test-driven-builder-v1-unified.git
  1. 1

    Setup complexity is LOW. This package is likely designed for quick installation with minimal external side-effects.

  2. 2

    Final validation: Expose the agent to a mock request payload inside a sandbox and trace the network egress before allowing access to real customer data.

Full README

name: test-driven-builder-v1-unified description: A builder that generates Agent Skills using a unified test runner with declarative test tables and property-based validation instead of separate script-based tests. version: 0.1.0 license: Apache-2.0

Unified Test-Driven Builder

Generate agent skills from idea prompts using a single consolidated test runner that replaces scattered test scripts with a declarative, table-driven validation system.

Inputs

  1. idea_prompt - the core idea to build a skill around
  2. idea_context (optional) - additional context or constraints
  3. target output directory .soup/skills/<skill-name>/

Structural Approach

This builder restructures the test-driven workflow around a unified validation architecture. Instead of writing individual bash test scripts with manual assertion functions, all validation is declared in a single test_manifest.json file and executed by a reusable runner.

Phase 1: Define the Test Manifest

Before any implementation, create scripts/test_manifest.json containing a declarative specification of all test cases organized by category:

{
  "skill_name": "<skill-name>",
  "test_groups": [
    {
      "group": "happy_path",
      "cases": [
        {
          "name": "basic usage",
          "command": "<command-to-test>",
          "assertions": {
            "exit_code": 0,
            "stdout_contains": ["expected output"],
            "stdout_not_contains": ["error", "warning"],
            "stderr_empty": true
          }
        }
      ]
    },
    {
      "group": "edge_cases",
      "cases": [
        {
          "name": "empty input",
          "command": "<command-with-empty-input>",
          "assertions": {
            "exit_code": 1,
            "stderr_contains": ["usage"]
          }
        }
      ]
    },
    {
      "group": "property_checks",
      "cases": [
        {
          "name": "output is valid JSON",
          "command": "<command>",
          "assertions": {
            "exit_code": 0,
            "output_is_valid_json": true
          }
        },
        {
          "name": "idempotent on repeated runs",
          "command": "<command>",
          "repeat": 3,
          "assertions": {
            "all_outputs_identical": true
          }
        }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

Phase 2: Write the Test Runner

Create scripts/run_tests.sh as a generic, reusable runner that reads the manifest:

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
SCRIPT_DIR="$(cd "$(dirname "${BASH_SOURCE[0]}")" && pwd)"
MANIFEST="$SCRIPT_DIR/test_manifest.json"
PASS=0; FAIL=0; SKIP=0

run_case() {
  local name="$1" cmd="$2" assertions="$3" repeat="${4:-1}"
  local outputs=()
  for ((i=0; i<repeat; i++)); do
    local stdout stderr exit_code
    stdout=$(eval "$cmd" 2>"/tmp/test_stderr_$$" || true)
    exit_code=$?
    stderr=$(cat "/tmp/test_stderr_$$")
    outputs+=("$stdout")
    # Check each assertion type from the JSON
    # exit_code, stdout_contains, stderr_contains, etc.
  done
  # For property checks like all_outputs_identical, compare all outputs
}

# Parse manifest with python3 -c for JSON processing
# Iterate groups and cases, call run_case for each

Phase 3: Build Implementation

Only after the manifest and runner exist, write the actual skill:

  1. Create SKILL.md with valid frontmatter (name, description, version: 0.1.0, license: Apache-2.0)
  2. Write supporting implementation files in scripts/ or references/
  3. Ensure every generated skill includes at least one concrete example command

Phase 4: Validate and Ship

Run the test runner against the implementation:

bash scripts/run_tests.sh

All test groups must pass before the skill can be published. The runner produces a structured summary:

Test Results: <skill-name>
  happy_path:      3/3 passed
  edge_cases:      2/2 passed
  property_checks: 2/2 passed
  TOTAL:           7/7 passed

Output Contract

  • SKILL.md is mandatory with valid YAML frontmatter
  • scripts/test_manifest.json declares all test expectations as structured data
  • scripts/run_tests.sh is the sole test execution entry point
  • At least one file in references/ with execution or validation guidance
  • No absolute paths or .. segments in generated file paths
  • Include at least one concrete example command the agent can run

Quality Gates

  • Test manifest must contain at least one case per group (happy_path, edge_cases, property_checks)
  • All property checks must pass (idempotency, output format validity)
  • Generated skill must be self-contained and coherent without external context
  • Document limitations and safe fallback behavior for risky operations
  • Skill name must be kebab-case, 3-50 characters
