Screen Recording

Overview

This skill enables capturing screenshots and screen recordings on macOS using the built-in screencapture utility. It handles display wake/unlock, supports full-screen and region captures, timed video recordings, and GIF conversion via ffmpeg.

Display: Samsung C49RG9x ultrawide (3840×1080)

Capture Workflow

Always follow this sequence:

1. Wake the Display

The display may be sleeping. Always wake it first:

caffeinate -u -t 5

Wait a moment for the display to fully wake before capturing.

2. Unlock Screen (if needed)

If the screen is locked, unlock it using the PIN from references/credentials-ref.md:

osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to keystroke "PIN_FROM_CREDENTIALS"'
# Press return
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to keystroke return'

Wait 1-2 seconds after unlocking before capturing.

3. Capture

Choose the appropriate capture method below.

4. Convert (optional)

Convert video to GIF if needed for sharing.

Capture Methods

Screenshot (Full Screen)

/usr/sbin/screencapture -x output.png

-x suppresses the shutter sound
Output is 3840×1080 for the ultrawide display

Region Capture

/usr/sbin/screencapture -x -R x,y,w,h output.png

Useful regions for the 3840×1080 ultrawide:

Left half: -R 0,0,1920,1080
Right half: -R 1920,0,1920,1080
Center third: -R 1280,0,1280,1080

Screen Recording (Timed)

/usr/sbin/screencapture -v -V <seconds> output.mov

-v enables video mode
-V <seconds> records for that duration then stops
Output is a .mov file

Convert to GIF

ffmpeg -i input.mov -vf "fps=10,scale=640:-1" -loop 0 output.gif

For higher quality (larger file):

ffmpeg -i input.mov -vf "fps=15,scale=1280:-1" -loop 0 output.gif

Tips

Always wake first — captures on a sleeping display produce black images
Use -x for silent screenshots (no shutter sound)
GIF file sizes — 10fps at 640px wide keeps GIFs under ~5MB for most 10s recordings
Region coordinates — use 0,0 as top-left origin; the ultrawide is 3840×1080
Permissions — screencapture requires Screen Recording permission in System Settings > Privacy & Security
