Site Monitor

Overview

Monitor one or more URLs for uptime and performance. Checks HTTP status codes and response times against configurable thresholds, sends alerts when sites are down or slow, and logs results for historical tracking. Designed to run as a cron job.

Workflow

Read config → Check each site → Compare thresholds → Alert if needed → Log results

Step 1: Read Configuration

The monitor reads from a JSON config file (default: site-monitor-config.json in the workspace).

{
  "sites": [
    {
      "url": "https://example.com",
      "name": "Example Site",
      "expected_status": 200,
      "timeout_ms": 5000,
      "slow_threshold_ms": 2000
    },
    {
      "url": "https://api.example.com/health",
      "name": "Example API",
      "expected_status": 200,
      "timeout_ms": 10000,
      "slow_threshold_ms": 3000
    }
  ],
  "defaults": {
    "expected_status": 200,
    "timeout_ms": 10000,
    "slow_threshold_ms": 3000
  },
  "alert_channel": "telegram",
  "log_file": "site-monitor-log.json",
  "log_format": "json"
}

Config fields:

  • sites[].url — URL to check (required)
  • sites[].name — Display name (optional, defaults to URL)
  • sites[].expected_status — Expected HTTP status code (default: 200)
  • sites[].timeout_ms — Request timeout in milliseconds (default: 10000)
  • sites[].slow_threshold_ms — Response time above this = slow alert (default: 3000)
  • defaults — Fallback values for any site missing a field
  • alert_channel — Where to send alerts: telegram, discord, or none
  • log_file — Path for history log (default: site-monitor-log.json)
  • log_formatjson or csv

Step 2: Check Each Site

For each site, run the check script:

python3 skills/public/site-monitor/scripts/check_sites.py site-monitor-config.json

The script:

  1. Reads the config file
  2. Makes HTTP GET requests to each URL (using urllib — no dependencies)
  3. Records status code, response time, and any errors
  4. Compares against thresholds
  5. Outputs a JSON results object to stdout
  6. Appends results to the log file

Step 3: Evaluate Results

Each site check produces a result:

{
  "url": "https://example.com",
  "name": "Example Site",
  "status": "ok",
  "status_code": 200,
  "response_time_ms": 450,
  "timestamp": "2026-02-12T15:05:00Z",
  "error": null
}

Status values:

  • ok — Site responded with expected status within threshold
  • slow — Site responded correctly but above slow_threshold_ms
  • down — Wrong status code or connection error
  • timeout — Request timed out

Step 4: Alert If Needed

If any site is down, timeout, or slow, send an alert. The script outputs a formatted report that can be sent via the configured channel.

Alert format:

🔴 Site Monitor Alert

❌ Example API — DOWN (503) — 0ms
⚠️ Blog — SLOW (200) — 4521ms
✅ Example Site — OK (200) — 450ms

Checked: 3 sites | Failed: 1 | Slow: 1
Time: 2026-02-12 15:05:00 EST

When all sites are healthy, the script exits silently (exit code 0) unless --verbose is passed.

Step 5: Log Results

Results are appended to the log file. JSON format example:

{"timestamp": "2026-02-12T15:05:00Z", "results": [
  {"url": "https://example.com", "status": "ok", "status_code": 200, "response_time_ms": 450},
  {"url": "https://api.example.com/health", "status": "down", "status_code": 503, "response_time_ms": 0, "error": "503 Service Unavailable"}
]}

CSV format: timestamp,url,name,status,status_code,response_time_ms,error

Cron Setup

Use OpenClaw cron to run the monitor on a schedule:

# Check every 5 minutes
openclaw cron add --schedule "*/5 * * * *" --label "site-monitor" \
  --command "python3 skills/public/site-monitor/scripts/check_sites.py site-monitor-config.json" \
  --channel telegram

# Check every hour (less aggressive)
openclaw cron add --schedule "0 * * * *" --label "site-monitor-hourly" \
  --command "python3 skills/public/site-monitor/scripts/check_sites.py site-monitor-config.json --verbose" \
  --channel telegram

Or as a manual check anytime:

python3 skills/public/site-monitor/scripts/check_sites.py site-monitor-config.json --verbose

Flags:

  • --verbose — Always output a report, even when all sites are healthy
  • --json — Output raw JSON instead of formatted report
  • --dry-run — Check sites but don't write to log file
