Claude Code Callback Skill

Dispatch development tasks to Claude Code asynchronously and receive results via Hook callbacks.

Setup (one-time)

1. Install Claude Code CLI

npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code

2. Deploy Hook scripts

Run the setup script to install hooks and configure Claude Code:

This will:

  • Create ~/.claude/hooks/ directory
  • Install notify-openclaw.sh hook script
  • Create ~/.claude/settings.json with Stop + SessionEnd hooks registered

3. Configure environment

Set these in OpenClaw's environment or .env:

Dispatching a Task

When user requests complex development work:

Step 1: Create task metadata

Step 2: Launch Claude Code in background

For complex multi-file tasks, add --agent-teams (if available) for parallel Lead/Dev/Test agent coordination.

Step 3: Respond immediately

Tell the user the task has been dispatched and they'll be notified on completion. Continue handling other requests.

Step 4: Handle callback

When the Wake Event arrives, read /tmp/claude-task/latest.json and report:

  • Task description and duration
  • Completed features
  • Test results (if any)
  • File changes summary

Important Notes

  • Zero Polling: Never loop/sleep to check Claude Code status. The hook handles notification.
  • Dual Hooks: Both Stop and SessionEnd are registered for reliability (normal completion + unexpected termination).
  • Token Efficiency: OpenClaw's context is not consumed while Claude Code works.
  • Error Handling: If the hook fails to fire, check /tmp/claude-task/task-output.json manually.
