Gemini CLI (Google) — Skill

Use this skill when you want to run Google’s Gemini CLI (@google/gemini-cli) from the terminal for one-shot prompts, interactive sessions, or JSON output suitable for piping into other tools.

Quick start

Prefer no-install invocations for automation:
- npx -y @google/gemini-cli --help
- npx -y @google/gemini-cli -p "Say pong" --output-format json
Optional global install:
- npm i -g @google/gemini-cli → command becomes gemini

Auth (required)

If auth isn’t configured, Gemini CLI returns an error like: Please set an Auth method in your ~/.gemini/settings.json or specify one of: GEMINI_API_KEY, GOOGLE_GENAI_USE_VERTEXAI, GOOGLE_GENAI_USE_GCA

Choose one:

API key (simplest)
- Export GEMINI_API_KEY in your shell environment.
Vertex AI / GCA
- Set GOOGLE_GENAI_USE_VERTEXAI=1 or GOOGLE_GENAI_USE_GCA=1 and use your normal Google Cloud authentication flow.
- If gcloud is available, prefer Application Default Credentials.
