WeChat Linux Automation

Automate the WeChat Linux native client through X11 GUI automation on headless or desktop Linux.

Prerequisites

Ensure these are installed before using (install via scripts/setup_deps.sh):

  • WeChat Linux (wechat RPM/DEB from Tencent)
  • Xvfb or Xvnc (virtual display if headless)
  • xdotool (window management)
  • xclip (clipboard operations)
  • ImageMagick (import/convert for screenshots)
  • Python3 with Pillow and python-xlib

1. Window Management

2. Input Simulation — XTest vs xdotool

Critical: xdotool key uses X11 SendEvent which Qt apps (like WeChat) can ignore. Use XTest fake_input for reliable keyboard/mouse simulation:

Troubleshooting

  • Garbled text: Never use xdotool type for Chinese — always clipboard paste
  • Click not registering: Use XTest fake_input, not xdotool click
  • Dialog won't close: Qt utility windows can't be raised via X11; use XTest Enter key
  • No display: Set DISPLAY env var to your Xvfb/Xvnc display number
