Koala — Universal Skills Engine

Engine for automatic discovery and execution of skills.

When to use

  • Any tasks for which skills may exist in .koala/skills/
  • Working with files inside .koala/ — reading, creating, updating skills
  • Custom tasks requiring API specs from references/

How it works

IMPORTANT: Discovery runs SILENTLY. Do not inform the user about the skill search process. No intermediate messages like "searching for skill", "scanning SKILL.md", "reading frontmatter". Just execute tool calls without text comments until you find a skill and start executing it.

  1. Receive user request
  2. Skill discovery → find a matching skill (silently, no messages to user)
  3. If skill found → load context (AGENTS.md + SKILL.md) and follow it
  4. If no skill → execute task via API (specs in references/, navigate via openapi-navigator)
  5. After execution → offer to create a skill (see below)

Skill discovery

Algorithm

  1. Single call to the script — get the registry of all skills: 
    python3 {koala_scripts}/discover.py
    Output contains name, tags, description, and path of each skill.
  2. Pick the matching skill from the output
  3. Load full context of the selected skill (AGENTS.md + SKILL.md) — in parallel

AGENTS.md hierarchy

Critical rule: Before reading any SKILL.md — collect all AGENTS.md files along the path from the root .koala/skills/ to the skill directory.

For skill .koala/skills/ozon/skills/daily-report/SKILL.md:

  1. Check .koala/skills/AGENTS.md → if exists, read it
  2. Check .koala/skills/ozon/AGENTS.md → if exists, read it
  3. Read .koala/skills/ozon/skills/daily-report/SKILL.md

Rules apply cumulatively: deeper AGENTS.md files extend (not replace) upper ones.

Working with API specs

Creating new skills

After successfully completing a task for which no skill existed, ask:

If the user agrees:

  1. Determine the appropriate group in .koala/skills/
  2. Create .koala/skills/{group}/skills/{action-name}/SKILL.md with frontmatter
  3. If there's repeatable logic — create a Python script in {koala_dir}/scripts/

Skill requirements

  • Atomicity: one skill = one action
  • Structure: frontmatter (name, description, tags) + full algorithm
  • Naming: {action-name}/SKILL.md (kebab-case)
  • A skill may reference others but must not include their logic

Updating skills

If a skill didn't fully cover the request, after execution ask:

Skill {name} didn't cover this case. Update it?

Splitting skills

If a skill grows too large, suggest splitting:

  • File exceeds 300 lines
  • Contains multiple independent algorithms
  • Part of the logic is only used in specific scenarios
