Create Agent Skills

This skill defines how to create new Agent Skills and where to put them: project .claude/skills/ when the current working directory is inside a project that has it, otherwise user ~/.claude/skills/.

Target Directory Rule

Project-level (.claude/skills/): Use when the current working directory (or an ancestor) contains a .claude directory with a skills subdirectory. Walk up from CWD; use the first {ancestor}/.claude/skills found.

User-level (~/.claude/skills/): Use when no project .claude/skills exists in the CWD ancestry. On Windows, use %USERPROFILE%\.claude\skills or $env:USERPROFILE\.claude\skills if ~ is not available.

Create the skills directory (and ~/.claude if needed) when creating the first skill in that location.

Skill Structure (Agent Skills Spec)

Each skill is a folder with:

  • SKILL.md (required): YAML frontmatter + Markdown body.
  • scripts/, references/, assets/ (optional): Add only when needed.

Frontmatter required fields:

  • name: 1–64 chars; lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens only; no leading/trailing or consecutive hyphens; must match the skill directory name.
  • description: 1–1024 chars; what the skill does and when to use it.

Optional: license, compatibility, metadata, allowed-tools (space-delimited).

Use progressive disclosure: keep SKILL.md lean; put detailed material in references/ and load as needed.

Workflow to Create a New Skill

  1. Resolve target root: Determine {base}/.claude/skills (project) or ~/.claude/skills (user) from current working directory as above. Create skills (and parent dirs) if missing.

  2. Choose skill name: Kebab-case, matches directory name, conforms to name rules. Example: my-api-helper.

  3. Create layout:

    • {skills_root}/{skill-name}/SKILL.md
    • Optionally references/, scripts/, assets/ (or examples/ if following plugin-style conventions).

  4. Write SKILL.md:

    • Frontmatter: name (same as directory), description in third person with specific trigger phrases (e.g. "This skill should be used when the user asks to …").
    • Body: imperative instructions; concise overview and workflow; pointers to references/, scripts/, assets/ if present.

  5. Add resources as needed: reference docs in references/, utilities in scripts/, templates/assets in assets/.

  6. Validate: Frontmatter valid; name matches directory; description has triggers; body uses imperative form; no broken references.

Use references/skill-template.md as a minimal SKILL.md template.

Best Practices (Summary)

  • Description: Third person, explicit trigger phrases, 1–1024 chars.
  • Body: Imperative form; keep under ~2k words when possible; move detail to references/.
  • Naming: name = directory name; kebab-case; no leading/trailing or consecutive hyphens.
